    few days in bangkok

Spending a few days in Bangkok paradise is one way to start your New Year! It’s certainly a destination to go to. Everything looks so beautiful and grand and it just looks like paradise. It has been on my wish list to travel to ever since we had planned to go to Sri Lanka. We had planned to visit Sri Lanka for my mums 40th 10 years ago.

    LANDING IN BANGKOK

But after the Tsunami happened we ended up travelling to Dubai and The Maldives instead (which were both amazing). I have always wanted to travel to Asia. But the long flights have always put me off due to my travel sickness. But now I have that under wraps, I am finally venturing further afield. You can read my other posts on Thailand here.

Flying with a Taiwan airline called Eva Air who we’ve never flown with before. For a long haul flight of 11 hours, it is definitely the longest flight we’ve been on. Taking off from Heathrow Terminal 2, we arrived two hours before departing. Grabbed dinner in the Wondertree restaurant and I had their Wonder Salad which was delicious.

    OUR GORGEOUS HOTEL

Staying in the ever so lush Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn 5*, which is right in the centre of Bangkok, near all of the tourist attractions and right on one of the BTS Sky Train (which btw, it cost pennies to use) stations so it’s perfect for getting around the city. Bangkok city certainly reminds me of London and Tokyo mixed into one. I love the city vibe and it’s filled with some stunning architecture. As soon as we arrived at the hotel we was greeted by smiles.

And a sparkly chandelier filled reception, marble floors and fluffy rugs. It was definitely heaven after a very long 11 hour flight. The concierge helped us with our suitcases and hand luggage. So we didn’t have to carry a thing and had a swift check in. Then we took the lift to our rooms.

    ROOFTOP VIEWS

The rooms were huge with double beds each and a massive window overlooking the city. A flat screen tv took up most of the wall with a wardrobe, mini bar and sofa. The bathroom was big as well with a light up mirror, glass wash basins and a walk in power shower. I just couldn’t wait to get into that cozy bed. We unpacked and got refreshed before heading to the hotel opposite us – The Roof @ 38th Bar Mode Hotel.

It has a sky bar overlooked the city night life. It was definitely a great welcome! I had their Red Bull Splitzer Mocktail which was super refreshing, their Calamari spring rolls and had ribs for dinner. When we got back to our hotel we checked out our infinity pool before heading to bed.

    DAY ONE

Our first full day in Bangkok was filled with visiting their temples. And exploring up the river on long tail boats. We first grabbed a well earned breakfast in our hotel. That was a massive range of continental food from your typical full english breakfast. To asian food such as pad thai and noodles to sushi etc. Anything you could think off, it was also an all you can eat so you never left feeling hungry. We grabbed a long tail boat off our nearest dock and headed up the river towards the temples. We walked around the grounds near them for a little bit. Which had a Starbucks and a few other food shops before the temples.

    THE GRAND PALACE

Prepare to be mesmerised by the beauty of their gold temples and all of the sparkly gems within the architecture. I couldn’t stop taking photos. It was a beautiful hot day with temperatures hitting 38 degrees! Not temperatures that I am used to anyway. We got a little bit hassled by some guys outside. Who tried to trick us by saying the temple was closed so they could rip us off and take us on some random tour.

But there was announcements coming from the temple saying they were open and to buy your tickets inside. So we completely ignored the guys and walked the other way. The boys were also being hassled as they were wearing cropped trousers. And the guys were telling them to change their trousers. But we ignored them as well and the boys got their trousers from inside the temple so it was legit. The main temple in Bangkok and the one everyone needs to go to is The Grand Palace And The Emerald Buddha.

    TEMPLE OF THE RECLINING BUDDHA

After exploring the temples we were desperate for a nice ice cold drink, so we found a nearby cafe and got some refreshing drinks to hide from the sun. We then grabbed the long tail boat across the river to another temple to explore and then we ventured to find the Temple of the Reclining Buddha.

It is another huge tourist attraction that everyone needs to see. It is currently having it’s feet refurbished but that doesn’t stop you from enjoying it’s beauty and taking in the wonderful architecture. It’s quite hard to get any decent photos of the Reclining Buddha as there are huge pillars blocking it but you can get some okay photos to show what it looks like. They have masses of bowls, one for each monk that you can take a pouch of coins and give each monk a coin in their bowl.

    DAY TWO

Day two we travelled to one of the smaller floating markets as the bigger ones are so filled with tourists you don’t really get to experience them very well so we visited Taling-Chan Floating Market, not too far from our hotel. It’s filled with so many aromas of Thai cooking, with small longtail boats catching all sorts of local fish, and lots of mini stalls selling handmade goods to your typical tourist buys.

We explored around a little bit before catching a longtail boat tour up the river to an orchid farm and an old temple currently being refurbished. The orchid farm was a stop to get drinks and snacks if we wanted any as it was still hitting the top of the 30’s, so we grabbed a cold drink whilst walking around the orchid farm which was filled with pretty orchids in every colour you could think of.

It was our last night in Bangkok so we ventured around some of the shopping centres and came across Hard Rock Cafe and decided to have dinner there, they had a live band playing lots of rock songs which me and my Dad loved. I had their Strawberry and Mint Lemonade which was so yummy and refreshing and also their Legendary Burger which was so big I couldn’t eat it all, on top of that we shared some nachos.
We then headed back to our hotel to pack and rest before our flight the next day – moving onto Phuket!
