WHY WE NEED TO SAVE THE PLANET?
Did you know there are more than 1 BILLION plastic phone cases sold every single year? Can you imagine the impact that will have on the environment and landfill when these biodegrade down!?
I wanted to make a change and switch my phone case to one that will have a better impact on the environment and where the proceeds will go to clearing up plastic waste. WHAT ARE THE CASES MADE FROM?
This is probably a huge question on your mind right now, what could a compostable and eco friendly phone case be made from? This is where I tell you. First of all these phone cases are compostable and non biodegradable. There is a huge difference between the two and they will both affect the environment in very different ways.
Biodegradable refers to a material breaking down with the help of microorganisms. To be labelled a biodegradable plastic, there is no time limit set on when the product breaks down and these plastics CAN leave behind toxic residue.
Compostable refers to a material capable of breaking down into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass at the same rate as cellulose. Compostable plastic must also disintegrate and become indistinguishable in the compost and CANNOT leave any toxic material behind.
The huge factor between the two is the amount of toxic material being left behind, so we favour the compostable option when it comes to the environment. All of Pela’s phone cases are made from Canadian flax shive (the core material separated from the stem of the flax plant during fiber extraction) and a plant based biopolymer to create for their compostable cases.
